All cars to Tonnelle Hotel, 62nd and Cypress. Gun shots fired. Man down. Send an ambulance. The static of the radio buzzed in Maddie's ears as she climbed into the back of the ambulance. Blood was everywhere, including the air. The heady, coppery scent made Maddie sick to her stomach.

Then the sterile smell of a hospital, more yelling, the clatter of wheels on tile as doctors and ER nurses rattled off details. A warm hand steering her toward the waiting room, giving her a cup of hot chocolate and a blanket. Corrine hovering in and out of her sight, pacing, worried, with her red-rimmed eyes. A man in blue asking her questions, writing down every word she said.

The fractured memories teased at Maddie's brain as she stared out the window of the plane. Outside, fluffy white clouds bobbed beneath her. Terror made her muscles itch as she thought of her assailant. A young woman, obsessed with Levi, had seen Maddie's picture online. Their intimate proximity lit a jealous fire under her. After a quick check of fan forums and paparazzi consultations, she plotted.

It wasn't a good plan. The woman didn't know if Maddie would even be alone, let alone that she would go to the front of the hotel, although the assailant did call the front desk, separating the celebrity from the assistant. However, the plan had luck on its side. And Levi didn't.

Well, at least when it came to being shot.

Miracles seemed to be on Levi's side though. Though the bullet went through his chest and through a lung before evacuating, and Levi's recovery had been speedy—in part, thanks to the wound being less severe than it could've been. Also, Levi's stubbornness and drive helped.

Maddie glanced back to the door that led to his room on the jet plane The man had fought his way out of that hospital, tooth and nail, bellowing idealistic nonsense—“My fans are counting on me,” “The show must go on,” and “Music is my life!”

Despite Maddie and Corrine's best attempts, Levi would have nothing of it. Within a week he forced his discharge from the hospital and was back on the figurative road. The fact the bullet had, miraculously, not broken any bones, or wedged into a problematic position in his body, worked to the rock star's advantage. Maddie was surprised how well he handled it. As his personal assistant, surveying his health and making sure he didn't strain himself had been added to her duties.

He had been quiet for a while—atypical considering he nearly fed off attention—so Maddie made her way back to the bedroom.

She found Levi, lying on his back, poking at his own tablet. He had spent his recovery reading articles about himself, answering fanmail and playing inane games. Levi's ego had taken quite a beating, every day, while he healed. He tended to brood over every little thing that weakened or exhausted him. Maddie closed the door quietly behind her and approached the bed, sitting on the edge.
